The only way to know about our HIV status is to get tested for it. In today’s activities, we are going to discuss the reasons why people go for HIV testing, as well as look at the advantages and disadvantages of knowing one’s status.
Why do people get tested for HIV?

● Before marriage
● Before stopping the use of condoms (to get pregnant)
● Because they think they are at risk of HIV infection
● Because they are worried of their health
● Because they think their partner put them at risk of HIV infection (cheating)
● Because they don’t feel well
● Because their doctor suggested it
● To get treatment and care if they are HIV positive

If a person has had sex, even with a condom, should they get tested for HIV? - Yes.
How often should they get tested? - It is recommended that anyone who has sex get tested once a year, even if they are using condoms.
Is it better for a couple to get tested together or separately? Why? - It is better for them to get tested together so they know each other’s status and if one or both are positive, they can get counselling together.
Where can you get tested? - Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) Mobile Clinic, State hospitals, public health clinics, private doctors, NAPPA clinics.
At what age can you go for an HIV test without your parents’ permission? - After you are 14 years old and above.
